Congressional Republicans showed real courage this week when they stood united against the $820 billion dollar economic stimulus package. Not a single Republican voted for this budget-busting pork laden measure. That’s right, not one single Republican voted for it. In fact 11 Democrats sided with us, making it truly bi-partisan resistance.

It was an easy bill to unify against, given that it was heavy with garbage that even not-so-conservative Republicans found obnoxious and could rail against.

For example, the criminals over at ACORN stand to get 4.19 billion in bailout funds for “neighborhood stabilization activities” from the bill. Translation: “Pay- felons- to- register -dead -people, football –stars –living-in-other-states, and- Disney- characters – so –that –Republicans- can’t -win –elections” activities.

Condoms for the poor, sex education programs without parental involvement, staples in any Democratic bill, were included as well. Those should come as no surprise to anyone since we all know that no Democratic legislation is ever complete without an effort to take decisions away from families and give them to the government.

In the end, Republicans found a way to be united for principle sake, and in doing so, gained the respect of Republicans all over the country. They may have lost the vote, but they sent an important message about fiscal responsibility, lower taxes, and smaller government that will be well-remembered.

Our own state assemblymen and senators should study the actions of their federal counterparts and stand united against any efforts by the Democrats to increase government spending when they head to Carson City next week.

Nevadans are facing tough economic times just like the rest of the country, perhaps even worse. Therefore, now is not the time to be saddling the backs of Nevada families with more tax burden. Even the democrats in Congress recognized that their own “stimulus” package had to contain tax breaks. If they could understand this, surely our Republican state legislators will as well.

Standing united for core Republican economic values resonates with the base of the Republican party. That’s an important message to remind Nevada Republican legislators who are not committed to holding the line on no new taxes.

Our great Senator John Ensign has shown resolve and has previously pledged to not raise taxes. Dean Heller, Nevada’s courageous lone Republican in the house has as well. Following their lead, and the example set by a unified Republican Congressional delegation will send the message to Nevadans that our state legislators, too, are prepared to stand up for core Republican values.

Nevada families will be thankful that they voted to help with their already heavy tax burden. Let’s tell our Republican legislators that we hope to be able to celebrate at the end of the legislative session, regardless of the outcome, their unified stand for Republican values and posterity.

Will the Senate unite the same way the House Republicans did? Don’t think so, not enough back-bone. Like my late wife (Anne) used to say “they’re nothing but 8×10 color glossys.” That means they look good, but can’t stand up on their own.

  2. It’s so important that we tell our senators what we want. When they are blasted with e-mails and phone calls, they listen – just look at the amnesty bill that didn’t pass.
I sure hope that the Senate follows the lead of the House, but I’m not so optimistic. There are too many moderates.

  3. I hope this is the beginning of a restoration of Republican principles. I can’t help but think that if Republicans opposed the last bailout, Jon Porter would still be in congress and McCain would be president right now. All the pork makes it easy for Americans to rally against, but we need to stand up and speak out against all this spending too.

In general, I feel uncomfortable with house or senate party leadership whipping the members to vote the party line when it may put them in a position to violate their own conscience and principles, but if ever there was an occasion to justify the pressure this is it. Also, if voting against this monstrosity is against their principles, what kind of principles do they have?

  5. My fear is the message our state GOP legislators are hearing is that bravery is sitting on the sidelines backing our Governors D.O.A. Budget. There will be some type of tax increase since next to nobody is willing to tolerate the cuts being proposed. The real GOP hero’s (probably all Northern Nevadans) will be fighting tooth and nail to SHAPE and L I M I T the tax increase. When the decision is made to increase revenue, the Dems aren’t going to stop at plugging the states budget deficit. My heroes are the one’s preparing to fight the real battle.

I agree with you that there is much to work with on the budget. I also agree that Republicans ought not be “sitting on the sidelines.” But there isn’t anything brave or heroic about conceding the battle to the liberals and special interest lobbyists on the issue of taxation. That is the REAL battle. If you doubt it, consider that the democrats don’t need a single Republican vote to accomplish what they want in this session. That is a fact. They also don’t want Republicans to gain any advantage in 2010 by appealing to their conservative base, so they would just love to have Republicans go along with their schemes. Thus Republicans ought to straighten their backs up and stand against any tax increases. They will have to endure blame from the democrats about being “obstructionist” and “not being part of the solution.” That’s real courage. The ones who do offer alternatives and fight for smaller government are my heroes, and they are the ones fighting the real battle. By the way, there isn’t anything brave about being “anonymous.”

  7. Politics is like sausage. You may like it, but you don’t want to watch it being made. The problems we have today are no different from Rome or Ancient Greece. The Ceaser’s placated the people by giving them the colloseum, and Gladiators. What are the politico’s giving us? They keep giving us platatudes, and bailouts. They wring their hands, nash their teeth, and do nothing. Bring back our jobs. Start up the steel mills, cut the union power, allow this country to make the products, that we are getting from COMMUNIST CHINA, and watch this country turn around. Now about our homegrown terrorist gangs, when is the Govt. going to crack down on them??????????????????

  8. Why is it so difficult to see what is going on? Krushev stated “…we will bury you from within…” The politicians are doing a good job of killing this nation. How many more pro communists will get elected? By the time the people wake up it will be over. The Noble Experiment will have been destroyed, by the very ones that yell the loudest that they are not COMMUNISTs! Bernie Sanders of VT. should be brought to the forefront on that. Why are homosexuals like barny frank allowed to hold office? As long as these types are in power, this ship is going to sink.

  9. As an employee in local government, I am not permitted to speak out as a representative, only as a private citizen. Today, I heard confirmed what I have believed: our city anticipates receiving federal funds, to cover budget deficits, from this “pork package.” A loan has been requested by the city, from the proprietary (enterprise) fund which is generated through sewer hookup fees, sewer bills. There is not enough revenue to support everything the city wants to do, in the governmental fund.

The enterprise fund is self-supporting, through hookup fees and ratepayers, and must be used for its intended purposes. The department of taxation must approve any sort of loan to the city, from the enterprise, or other proprietary fund. I’m sure that the department of taxation must examine the ability of the city to repay this loan. If approved, this tells me that they are counting on bailout money from the Pork Package.

Why would the State of NV not be counting on its passage, as well? Why would the State of CA not also be counting on it? Their straits are more dire than NV’s, and their debt is much higher–although their courts ruled that it is “okay” to bankrupt the State of CA, but not okay to impose a salary decrease or a couple of days of furlough for its employees. It is also okay for CA to increase spending, in spite of their huge deficit.

Isn’t the State of NY also in financial trouble? I didn’t get to vote in CA’s or NY’s elections. Most of the rest of the country did not either. But, I would bet the farm that American taxpayers will be required to bail out these states, and others whose representatives in Congress cave, and sign onto this monstrosity.

When election time comes, in 2010; Harry Reid, Dina Titus, Shelley Berkley; any of our representatives who voted to support this spending bill will campaign on this. They will say, “Look what we did for NV.” I don’t believe that taxpayers in other states should be required to bail out NV, either.

If money is to be printed and spent, why not use it to secure the borders, and deport those here illegally? Dina Titus is on the Homeland Security Committee, yet mentions nothing like this. Cutting taxes, and spending on sealing the borders would definitely create jobs. It would also lessen the burden on the school system, prison system, law enforcement, entitlements, and medical system in our state. We would need to employ people to construct a “wall,” to prevent illegal entry, to round up, and to deport illegal immigrants. Many positions would also be vacated, creating new entry-level jobs for legal citizens.

Our military budget is the last place that cuts should be made.
