By now, no doubt, every Republican is aware of the vote in the U.S. Senate, wherein RINO Senator Arlen Specter has signaled his intention to break ranks with his Republican colleagues and vote in favor of the massive Democrat “Bailout” bill. Estimates of the cost to taxpayers range from $820 billion to $1 trillion.

Our great Senator and rising national star John Ensign has taken a leadership role in fighting this bill by taking to the television news circuit and stating that he will oppose it, noting among other things that it “encourages wasteful spending.” Specter has gained the ire of Republicans from sea to shining sea. Ensign has earned their gratitude.

RINO Specter is up for re-election next year, and already, conservatives are organizing all over the country to ensure that he is not re-elected. Blogs are buzzing, phones are ringing, and fax machines are humming with calls to dump this clown, and not just from his home state of Pennsylvania.

The National Republican Trust PAC is going to provide money for primary challengers to any stimulus supporting Republican in the next election. Similar efforts are underway by many groups across the states. Right here in Nevada, “Republicans Against Arlen Specter” has been formed by CCRP Political Director David McGowan with the aim of raising money to donate to a Republican primary challenger.

Word today from Pennsylvania is that Pittsburgh native (Mt. Lebanon – GO STEELERS!) and conservative former Senator Rick Santorum may throw in against him. The rejoinder has been angry, swift, unified, and decisive.

What can our elected State Republican legislators learn from this?

Given the tremendous and unified response to Specter’s seditious act by conservatives from one end of the country to the other, I am hopeful that similarly situated Republican state legislators will take this opportunity to take note of the response, and plan their votes accordingly.

Indeed, I am hopeful that Republican legislators in our Nevada Senate and Assembly learn from the recent unified action of congressional Republicans who have stood against this action, as well. Two hundred fourteen out of two-hundred seventeen (214-3) Republican Congressmen and Senators stood strong and unified. The praise for their courage is well recorded.

This is certainly not meant as a threat. It is, however, a well considered conclusion based upon clear evidence, from a person whose aim it is to elect conservative Republicans.

I want Republicans to be conservative in their actions. I want the Republican Party to stand behind those who fight for less government, less taxes and overall fiscal responsibility. Republicans will need to have stood for these Republican principles now, in order to convey them in their campaigns in order to win in 2010.

A Republican legislator’s stand on issues of taxation and fiscal responsibility is fundamental, whether at the state or local level.

I am optimistic and encouraged by the responses of Republicans all over America for the principled stand they expect from our elected leaders, as evidenced by the positive response to congressional Republicans for being unified against wasteful government spending, as well as the negative response to the actions of turncoat Arlen Specter. I would expect no less of a response from Nevada Republicans to the future actions of our own state Republican legislators.

Let’s hope that we can be appreciative of and grateful for their votes.

    Bernie:

I read your blog about Arlan Spector and how Republicans are moving to replace him. I continue to wonder why we spend our energies in the wrong places. How about Republicans moving to replace Harry Reid? That is possible and would have a much greater impact than wasting resources on Specter.

Bernie – Santorum got his behind kicked before. Toomey tried to run against Specter last time and lost, with the help of Santorum working hand in hand with G W Bush. So, be wary of Santorum as some kind of savior. As PA’s gun owners found out, Santorum is not to be trusted. He will lie to your face and pray about it later to get absolution.

Specter has been running to the right and voting to the left for as long as he’s been around. But look at Pennsylvania. They love Bob Casey and Ed Rendell there. The state went Democratic in the last three presidential elections. It is now firmly a blue state. Even in the Republican bedroom communities around Philadelphia they only vote for squishy big government Republicans. And even some of them have been losing in recent elections.

Specter fits Pennsylvania perfectly. Should he lose the primary next time (not really sure he’s running. He’s had a recurrence of his cancer and he’ll be 80) the likelihood is that you’ll be looking at Pennsylvania with two Democratic senators. If that’s considered no loss by conservatives (and it isn’t) then you’ll probably understand why I wouldn’t lift a finger to help liberal, clueless McCain in the presidential election.

In fact, had McCain won the election, the fake stimulus bill being shoved down our throats is exactly the kind of legislation I would have expected from him as well. Only when he knows it will pass is he content to vote against it. Brian

    Brian and Roger;

You COMPLETELY missed the point. The “memo” is directed to Nevada State Assembly and Senate members. The Specter thing is an ANALOGY, although I support whole-heartedly those conservative groups who want to spend their money to oust him. Fact is, we can concentrate on Harry Reid, which is now happening, and still pay attention to what goes on in Pennsylvania.

  4. Brian Kominsky says:

Didn’t miss it. Just chose to address the analogy and hint at a larger problem: What is a conservative? And I am perfectly serious in asking that question. Maybe it’s at the root of a lot of our problems as Republicans. I see laundry lists of what a conservative supposedly is. But I see no coherent philosophy presented.

So, not to take the discussion where you don’t want it to go, please consider this a question for one of your future blog posts.

    What is conservatism?
What is the goal/are the goals of conservatism?
    Is the conservative movement misnamed?
Who is the best example of a conservative?

  5. Bernie…I take your point. I just think the term RINO either needs to either be forever retired or pinned on George Bush, John Porter and John Ensign. By their TARP voting record, the only real conservative we have left is Dean Heller.

I’m admittedly a little sensitive about Arlan Spector as we are both Hodgkin’s survivors.

This is exactly the action that we need to take. I am excited to see that finally we are addressing the Rhino’s that have found their way into the party for too long. We still need strong leadership in the party. We need a national star to direct and lead in Congress and on a daily basis. Where is this person?

  7. You make a good point, Brian. I almost wish that McCain would have continued to do the sort of things he does (voting for debt slavery for our children) than pull the ‘Buy American’ clause out of the bill.

Sylvia M. says: I like the idea of removing Harry Reid from office! Hopefully, Nancy P. with her lack of knowledge will bite the dust too! Sylvia

  9. Dan Barnett says:

Although, a small voice out here in Las Vegas, I will work to unseat the three “Republicans” that voted for this economy and Country breaking bill. In addition, as stated many times on this very blog, Reid and Pelosi need to be removed as well.

  10. YES! We all need to go above and beyond the call of duty to unseat Harry Reid. His shameful statements, actions, and partisanship are no good for America, and he isn’t helping Nevada with his position–he’s pushing a liberal agenda on America. Bernie, what are the odds that we could get MITT ROMNEY to run against him? Mitt would play great to our large Mormon contingent that turns out for Reid, and it would give him prestige (for beating Reid) as he entered the senate to launch another presidential bid

  11. I agree with you, Bernie! We’ve got to have representatives that stand up for conservatism!! I’m so tired of the Republicans backing down and getting their behinds handed to them. We’ve got to have people, locally, and nationally, that stop bowing to the democrats and stand up and do the right thing! Like you, I sure hope our state legislators are paying attention and getting the idea.
    Mike,
As a Latter-day Saint (Mormon), I’d just like you to know that there are many, many Mormons who do not in any way support Harry Reid! With the fact that Reid is so far left, his ideology has become quite disconnected with a majority of the LDS population. I personally only know one person that supports him, and that’s just because she’s related. Please understand that what Reid is doing up in Washington is quite incongruent with my beliefs.
Romney would be great to challenge Reid, but I don’t see it happening. He’d really have to come here soon, and get established. One thing about Reid that I think appeals to some Nevadans is that he was raised here, and understands what Nevada is about. Granted, that really isn’t the case, but it’s what the campaign puts out there and I think that could really hurt someone like Romney, who would really just be moving here in order to get elected. But, one never knows, stranger things have happened in politics.

Denise K’s last blog post..Change and Hope and a “Stimulus” That Will Be the End of Us

  12. As we all seem to agree…the so-called “stimulus” plan will not work…not ever. It can only lead to a worsening situation…spending precious treasure we don’t have on things we can’t afford…for a few fleeting jobs. The die is also cast for the socialist overhaul of the nation!

However, Obama, like FDR, will continue with his magic rhetoric and the fantasy that it’s all his predecessor’s fault. If you read the Sun, Greenspun and all the other liberals, they love the stimulus because it feels good. Harry worked hard for it, bless his soul and it’s helping people…in their disoriented minds…just like giving mortgages to people who would never be able to afford them was helping people and it felt so good. These people never take responsibility for anything they do….they can always find someone else to blame…like “greed on Wall Street or executive jets. Chris Doofus Dodd and Barney Frankenstein Frank didn’t just nudge banks into the dangerous waters, they gave them a hearty push. Now they get to run the show and fix the mess they created. Yeah, right! I’m about as angry as anyone can be.

I am pleased, that except for 3 idioits, the GOP hung together. Maybe that’s a bad choice of words. If we’re smart we’ll find a way to put a noose around the necks of the democrats. It won’t be easy changing the minds of idolizers. If you ever speak to the Obama lovers, it’s a battle against a mind-set, a battle against ethnic worship, a battle against stupidity and a battle against…”oh, he’s giving me some extra bucks….taking from those nasty rich folks”. Where is Ronald Reagan when we need him?

Keep up the fight. Maybe when the stimulus is in its 12 month and the jobless rate gets well over 10% and inflation hits the Carter year levels, it will sink in. I think it was Churchill who said and I may be paraphrasing: You can count on America to do the right thing….after they’ve tried everything else.

  13. Has any one ever believed that Spector was a true Republican? To me Republican means someone that believes in the Republic. At least that is what it should mean!
